Friday, May 14, 2010 - Save the Children UK launched new parent strengthening programme partnership with Families and Schools Together (FAST)Research from Save the Children UK showed a critical gap in local, universal services for parents with children moving from pre-school to primary school. They have proposed a solution to this gap in a partnership with the Families and Schools Together (FAST) program. There is a clear need for parents to be able to access services proven to help them enhance children’s learning and development in ways that translate into better educational outcomes in the short and long-term and FAST will meet that need along with other community needs.
Save the Children UK and FAST will support families in each country in the UK to improve their children's chances aged 3-5 to develop to their full potential. By giving children living in poverty a fair chance in life by raising their educational achievement levels and tracking their improvement over the long-term, we will be able to demonstrate greater opportunities for children who have participated in our programme to gain good qualifications and to obtain a well-paid job with prospects. By 2014, we will have established over 430 groups across the UK, reached 50,000 children and trained 8,700 new FAST programme facilitators. We will use this growing evidence base of improved child outcomes, parent and community strengthening to call for change to the fabric of family support in the UK in order to ensure that every child and family has equal access to a continuum of evidence-based local support from birth.

The Save the Children and FAST partnership will enable:
* Children to succeed in school and have stronger life chances because of improved educational achievement in reading, writing and math, improved behaviour and better home-school relationships.
* Children to live in strengthened families because of improved parent-child bonds, communication, parental confidence, self-esteem, and reduced stress.
* Children to live in stronger communities with increased trust, community participation and reduced social isolation.
